Comes with two free VPN connections. With Amazon EC2 Mac instances, Apple developers will be able to run a Mac environment in the AWS cloud for the first time. Cyberduck is a libre FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, Amazon S3, Backblaze B2, Microsoft Azure & OneDrive and OpenStack Swift file transfer client for Mac and Windows. This brings to Apple developers all of the service capabilities and technology innovations available on AWS, bringing together two of the largest developer ecosystems in the world. Why is this a big deal? Access to a Mac environment in AWS has been an ask from Apple developers for at least the last 10 years. These instances will run inside an Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), will have access to all the 175+ services available in the AWS cloud. The new Mac instances can be provisioned as Amazon EC2 Dedicated Hosts and developers can connect to them using the same SSH or VNC clients they would to log into any remote Mac machine. Amazon EC2 Mac instances are built on Mac mini machines, and are designed to deliver similar scalability benefits as other Amazon EC2 instances. Indexed on an available client port on your network router or hub. What’s new? AWS introduced a new product today — Amazon EC2 Mac instances — offering customers access to an on-demand macOS environment in the AWS cloud. Amazon Client Software Developers WorldwideAnd Apple developers are continuously looking for ways to deliver high quality experiences and delight customers. Apple’s position as a market leader and innovator in consumer devices has naturally attracted developers, making the Apple developer community one of the largest and fastest growing communities of software developers worldwide. Below are links to some examples through the years, from 2011, 2014, 20, all asking for “OS X/macOS on AWS” (links at the bottom)! This demand is easy to understand, when you consider their relative positions in the market. This is especially valuable when validating macOS specific capabilities — like graphics acceleration using Metal API or OS translation layers like Rosetta or encrypted storage using Apple’s T2 security chip. And while applications for Mac computers can be developed using other IDEs like Visual Studios and Eclipse, Xcode offers a unified development, distribution and maintenance workflow, often making it a preferred environment for Mac client applications. The Xcode environment and underlying toolset are practically the only way to build and distribute applications for Apple’s mobile and TV devices. Xcode provides a well-integrated environment that allows developers to code (supporting multiple languages including the popularly used Swift, Objective C, C/C++) against the target device OS SDK, maintain versions, leverage reusable components, build/simulate/debug, and distribute the apps through the App Store. There is a natural synergy between these two ecosystems.Today, development activities for Apple products (Mac computers, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Apple TV) are centered around Xcode, Apple’s Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for all Apple operating systems (OS). Through the years, it has maintained its momentum of service expansion for developers, continuing to simplify the developer experience, reduce cost, and deliver new technologies to developers. Developers often need to maintain and upgrade multiple machines across various combinations of supported client hardware and software. This partnership will both — accelerate the pace of front end development for Apple client applications, and make it easier for the back end development to use the full suite of AWS services as needed. For larger macOS development teams, maintaining a development fleet and upgrading the operating systems itself can be challenging and daunting (e.g., moving from macOS Catalina to Big Sur). This will speed up the building, testing and launching of new applications that wish to take advantage of emerging AI/ML or data analytics capabilities, or to deliver end customer experiences built on broader solutions like an IoT implementaiton. The unified environment would allow customers to more easily leverage AWS services for their backend needs, and to troubleshoot complex end to end interactions in an easy manner. This is very different than other development environments for other targets like ChromeOS, Android and Windows that can be installed and/or emulated on most Windows/Linux machines. For client/server applications targeting an Apple based client, Amazon EC2 Mac instances creates a natural “full stack development environment” in AWS, allowing developers to build, troubleshoot and operate the full stack application from within the same environment. The pipeline of innovative applications and new experiences are an integral component of the Apple experience. For Apple, the expansion of capabilities for Apple developers will directly add to this Apple customer experience, increasing the value Apple enables for its customers. This will allow developers to reduce costs and increase velocity of application delivery to Apple customers. The lower cost of entry and lower cost of operations will act as a catalyst to the expansion of the Apple developer community, lower cost of development of Apple applications, and increase the pace of innovation and pace of new application delivery. AWS Nitro System has been an integral enabler to the integration between the Mac minis and the AWS cloud, the speed and completeness of similar partnerships with other cloud providers may be limited by the extent to which a similar integration can take place into their respective clouds. However, this is where AWS Nitro System gives AWS a true differentiator in terms of the time to market for such new hardware. Like the iCloud, Apple may want to have multiple cloud provider partners over time. Citrix receiver for mac not workingIts great to (finally) see these two environments come together! I look forward to trying the Amazon EC2 Mac instances, and moving over some of my projects. As someone who has been a Mac user since then, and as a hobbyist developer continuing to use a Mac as my primary development machine, this announcement has been particularly exciting. This may also take the form of a more direct SaaS like capability being delivered as an experience to developers — enabled by the partnership between Apple and AWS, and deep integrations across services.Next steps? I first started using a Mac in 2009, when my manager at the time gave me an iPhone 3GS and a MacBook and asked me think about how we could integrate the iPhone into our product experience. The initial experience and exposure to services will likely trigger a wave of demand for deeper integrations across these environments, such as native AWS CodeGuru integration with Xcode, deeper integration with AWS Device Farm for troubleshooting and deeper integration into AWS Amplify.
